  • Impulsive Disorders

AutPlay Therapy is based on the concept of neurodiversity, which recognizes that the human brain is wired differently and that these differences are not disorders, but natural variations of the human experience. As such, AutPlay Therapy is neurodiversity affirming, meaning it recognizes and respects the unique strengths and challenges of each individual and embraces their differences as a fundamental part of who they are.

AutPlay Therapy sessions are typically structured around the child or young adult’s interests and preferences, using play activities that are enjoyable and meaningful to them. These play activities may include sensory play, board games, card games, arts and crafts, music, and other interactive activities. The AutPlay Therapist works closely with the child or young adult to develop a trusting and supportive relationship, using a combination of verbal and non-verbal communication, to create a safe and secure environment where the child feels understood and accepted.

One of the key features of AutPlay Therapy is its emphasis on parent involvement. Parents are encouraged to participate in therapy sessions and learn strategies to support their child's progress outside of therapy sessions. Parent involvement is essential to the success of AutPlay Therapy, as it helps to ensure that the child's progress is consistent and meaningful across all environments.

There are three phases to AutPlay Therapy: intake and assessment, structured play interventions, and termination. The intake and assessment phase takes place throughout 3-4 sessions. It focuses on building a relationship with the child or young adult, gathering information about the child and family, observing the child or young adult in play sessions, observing the child-parent relationship, and establishing therapy goals. During the second phase, the AutPlay Therapist provides directive play interventions based on the goals that were established with the family. The termination phase takes place over the course of three sessions once therapy goals have been accomplished and no new goals have been identified.

AutPlay® Therapy focuses on a particular issue or need a neurodivergent child or adolescent has and does not try to “fix” or “cure” the child or young adult. AutPlay® Therapy can help children and adolescents with:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Social navigation needs

  • Relationship development and connection

  • Sensory processing difficulties

  • Executive functioning

  • Anxiety

  • Self-esteem

  • Self-advocacy skills
